Since the opening of the Don Bosco Development Center more than 20 years ago, the Daughters of Charity have attended to many leprosy patients including their children and grandchildren.  They have put up services that assist the patients and their families so that they are able to live their life fully and responsibly.

If HIV/AIDS is the new disease affecting many today, it is leprosy that has affected many in 1960’s to 1990’s.  At present this disease is already controlled because of the availability of medicines and the better way of treatment.  The patients themselves also learned how to take care of themselves.

The Sisters continue to serve the patients in Nikhom Phudhong Leprosarium in collaboration with the government personnel.  They take charge of a ward which is a permanent home for some elderly and disabled leprosy patients.

ACTIVITIES:

• Sisters take charge of the cleanliness and the day to day activities of the patients in the ward
• Nursing care for all patients in the ward
• Home and hospital visitation
• Provision of food supplement to the elderly and the sick
• Hospital referral and provision of transportation to patients going to the hospital
• Loan assistance for house repair and fertilizer for livelihood projects
• Educational assistance to children and grandchildren of patients
• Emergency assistance like food and medicine during rainy seasons especially when the area is flooded not only in Nikhom but also in surrounding villages
• Get together of patients and elderly for sharing and socialization (4 times a year)
