Community Based
Rehabilitation Program

The Takeo Eye Hospital was first authorized to by a Memorandum of Understanding  (MoU) between Maryknoll and the Ministry of Health in November 1996.  In 2000, Takeo Eye Hospital was later turned over to Caritas Cambodia which signed the second MoU for 2000-2003, and later the third MoU for 2003 -2006 with the following purposes:eye_hospital

  1. The operation of Takeo Eye Hospital
  2. Training of doctors and nurses in order to provide eye care services in different government hospitals
  3. The assistance to the Ministry of Health in developing provincial eye units

The following are the activities that have been carried out during the year:

  • Training:

    • Diploma Ophthalmology
      • A post graduate 2-year course for doctors with the aim to train doctors in order to provide proper eye services in the provinces. 
      • The curriculum is approved by the Ministry of Health
      • 3 doctors started their training in 2004 will finish on January 2006.  They are the last group of doctors to take the course
      • The doctors were assigned to support the eye unit activity in Kampong Thom Provincial Hospital, Chea Shumneas Hospital, Kandal and Takeo Eye Hospital after completing the training.
      •  To date, Takeo Eye Hospital trained 15 doctors who are all assigned and working at different provincial hospitals in the country.
      • Takeo Eye Hospital responded to 20,750 consultations and 3,571 surgeries, outreach activities in neighboring villages, training of health center personnel and school screening activities
    • Diploma in Ophthalmic Nursing
      • The curriculum of Diploma in Ophthalmic Nursing was recently upgraded and approved by the Ministry of Health with the aim of having properly trained nurses to deliver eye care services and to teach ophthalmic nursing at the Regional Training Center
      • Implemented in close collaboration with Takeo Eye Hospital and the Kampot Regional Training Center
      • At present, 5 nurses are taking the course
      • The nurse trainees support the most needed daily nursing care delivered at the hospital plus the health education that comes along during the community services in the villages
    • Long Term Fellowship in Cornea and Anterior Segment
    • Upgrading Seminar for Nurses
    • Management Training and System Development for Hospital Administrator
    • Course on Instruments Repair and Maintenance
    • Training for Nurses Refractionist
    • Small Incision Cataract Surgery (CICS)
    • International Workshop on Resource Mobilization
    • Workshop for Managing the Integration of Culture into Development Programmers
  • Service Delivery at the Hospital
    • The service delivery of the hospital complements the need of the training by supplementing the cases needed for the study experiences.
    • The hospital provides the most needed eye care to be available in the country with 20,750 consultations and 3,571 surgeries
    • Conducted outreach activities in 5 health centers, 1 Buddhist temple
    • School screening in the biggest primary school of the province
  • Development of Provincial Eye Units
    • The Hospital helped the Ministry of Health in developing 5 provincial eye units.  The assistance included:
      • Cooperative effort from the CBR fieldworkers in facilitating for the poor clients to avail of the services in the eye unit by providing transportation cost or food allowance when needed
      • Regular supplies of medicines were made available to the unit with the incentives for the staff to ensure continuity of services in the said unit
      • Monitoring
    • The eye units delivered 11,575 consultations and 1,438 surgeries with 4,078 consultations in the health centers
  • Collaboration with other agencies
  • Other needs that were addressed:
    • Workshop on Hospital Survey for Quality Service and Improvement
    • Training for Health Center Staff = 71 health center staffs attended the 2 days training
    • Primary Eye Care and Referral System Training for school teachers = 16 school teachers attended the training seminar to equip them with basic knowledge to assist children who have eye problem
    • Survey for low surgical output for patients from outreach services
    • Formulation of the Taheo Eye Hospital Manual of Operation
